Hi, I'm Matt Thomson. I first seriously took an interest in photography in 2009 while on a holiday in New Zealand with a friend when he loaned me his DSLR to see if I enjoyed it. Until then the extent of my photographic skills was taking happy snaps on holidays. After my initial interest peaked, I soon turned my attention to night photography. I love how a camera can capture so much more than what the eye can see at night. Over the next few years I began slowly immersing myself in everything I could about night photography. I continue to practice and hone my skills and techniques at any opportunity I get, which often means a lot of late nights out in the cold.
I love all types of photography, especially landscape and nature, however I have taken a keen interest in the night sky. I prepare and plan shoots around the moon phases, hoping for clear skies. Even my family holidays are planned around the moon phases, being away from light polluted cities and where the milky way will be in the sky. We are very lucky in the southern hemisphere to have access to the brightest part of the milky way for roughly 9 months of the year.
Getting out in the crisp night air is a wonderful feeling. Seeing stars that most people never see and watching shooting stars is amazing. It's also an escape from my day job as an IT professional. Taking night photos also allows me to spend a lot of time with my young family while still exploring the world at night, albeit with a lack of sleep, but it's worth it.
